Thunderstruck II is, naturally, the follow up to Thunderstruck – one of Microgaming’s most popular slots ever. That being said, it could be argued that Thunderstruck II has actually overtaken its predecessor in terms of success. Launched way back in 2010, Thunderstruck II is a casino mainstay and a player favourite, thanks to its epic mythological graphics and its generous extra spins rounds. Read our full Thunderstruck II review below to find out more about the game’s bonus features, gameplay and performance.
Thunderstruck II is a five reel, 243 ways to win slot and it can be played for as little as 30p, up to £15 per spin. This makes the game accessible to a variety of different casino budgets, and the low wager sizes are even more impressive when you consider there’s a jackpot of 2.4 Million coins up for grabs! The slot also boasts a healthy 96.6% return to player rate and a medium variance, which means you will pick up fairly regular, sizeable rewards.
Thunderstruck II is based around Norse mythology, and so symbols include characters such as Valkyrie, Thor, Odin and Loki, as well as longboats and castles. Lower paying symbols are represented by the traditional nine to Ace playing card values, yet these are nicely crafted from stone to fit the theme.
The game’s wild is represented by the Thunderstruck II logo and, as well as substituting for all other symbols, it’s the highest paying symbol available, rewarding you with 1,000 coins for a five of a kind combination. There is also a scatter symbol, which is represented by Thor’s hammer, and three or more of these will trigger the extra spins round.
Thunderstruck II benefits from one bonus feature and four different extra spins rounds. The bonus Wildstorm feature is triggered randomly in the base game, and it has the potential to turn all five reels wild. This, of course, can create massive wins and is how players can pick up that huge 2.4 Million coin jackpot amount. Generally, however, you’re more likely to receive between one and three wild reels, which is nothing to be sniffed at. Furthermore, once the Wildstorm feature is activated you’ll receive one extra spin, to put the wild reels into action.
Although the Wildstorm feature can be very rewarding, the extra spins rounds are the ones to look forward to. The Great Hall of Spins feature consists of four different levels, and is triggered when you collect three or more bonus hammer symbols in the base game. The more times you trigger the extra spins round, the higher level you’ll unlock.
Players will start off with access to the Valkyrie extra spins round and you’ll remain on this level until you’re fifth time triggering the feature. In the Valkyrie extra spins round, players are rewarded with 10 free spins, with all wins multiplied by five.
On your fifth time triggering the bonus round, you’ll level up to the Loki feature. Here you’ll be rewarded with 15 free spins, with a ‘wild magic’ symbol appearing on the middle reel. This can transform other symbols into additional wilds.
On your tenth trigger of the extra spins round, you’ll unlock the Odin feature. In this round, you’ll receive 20 free spins, with a ‘Wild Raven’ symbol present. The raven symbols can randomly reward you with 2x or 3x multiplier, or find two on the reels and you’ll receive a 6x multiplier.
Finally, on your fifteenth time triggering the extra spins round, you’ll unlock the Thor level. This time around you’ll be treated to 25 spins, with a rolling reel feature. The rolling reels feature means that consecutive winning spins give you increasing multipliers, from 2x to 3x to 4x to 5x.
Of course, triggering the extra spins round fifteen times can sound like hard work, but the beauty of Thunderstruck II is that has the ability to remember your achievements. This means that if you need to cut your gaming session short for some reason, the next time you play you can carry on where you left off. This means you can continue collecting free spins rounds and unlocking the higher levels each time you play.
Overall, Thunderstruck II is a highly entertaining game and we’d recommend it to any player who enjoys innovative and rewarding bonus features. The game’s medium volatility also means that you’ll collect wins pretty regularly, which will give you enough to keep going until you trigger either the Wildstorm feature, or unlock a new extra spins round. In our eyes, it’s no wonder that Thunderstruck II has stood the test of time, as it’s still a pretty impressive game seven years after its release!
